“The Dutch have been controlling the waters for over 1,000 years by using the splendid windmills of Kinderdijk, the unique spectacle.”
History of Kinderdijk
In the gorgeous wetlands around South Holland (Dordrecht), you can find the windmills of Kinderdijk. Nineteen windmills, built around 1740, stand there as a part of the larger water management system to prevent floods.
Nowadays, people symbolise Dutch water management, and in 1997 they were declared to be UNESCO World Heritage.
The Purpose
The Kinderdijk's windmills were created to keep the lowest lands of the Alblasserwaard dry.
We can admire how the Dutch have been using many waterways, dikes, mills and sluices especially water to their benefit for over 1000 years.
Useful!
Kinderdijk is easily accessible by Waterbus.
The boat trip will let you enjoy the incredible surroundings and you can bring your bike free of charge.
